Recognizing Maternal Sepsis
Maternal sepsis is a leading cause of pregnancy-related mortality in Canada, yet pregnancy physiology can mask the very signs clinicians rely on to detect it. Rising heart rate, shifting blood pressure, and elevated white blood cell counts occur naturally during pregnancy and labour, overlapping with thresholds designed for non-pregnant patients.
On September 15, we’re bringing together clinical and client perspectives on early recognition, assessment, and escalation of maternal infection and sepsis by the interprofessional care team. Speakers include Dr. Debra Boyce, Medical Director at Salus Global, and Dr. Megan Gomes, Medical Director of Maternal, Newborn & Gynecological Care at The Ottawa Hospital and Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, along with real-world examples and insights drawn from our work with client partners focused on improving maternal sepsis recognition and response.
