Values
Salus Global’s roots originated in 2001 within the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), under the leadership of then Associate Executive Vice-President Dr. J. Kenneth Milne. At the time, Canada was experiencing a growing shortage of healthcare professionals willing to assume the heightened liability risks associated with the practice of obstetrics. While various educational programs were available, Dr. Milne determined that none adequately addressed the spectrum of risk across the entire obstetrical team and the underlying causes of breakdowns in communication that contributed to that risk.
Recognizing the need for a comprehensive patient safety program that fostered a significant and sustainable change in culture, Dr. Milne and his interdisciplinary team developed the moreOB Program, a three-year, multi-phased approach that integrates a common clinical knowledge base with heightened multidisciplinary teamwork and collaboration. In the fall of 2002, the moreOB Program (Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently) was piloted in 33 hospitals involving 2,656 participants across three provinces. Based on the pilot’s success, the moreOB Program was launched nationally in 2004 and introduced into the United States in 2005.
Considered a breakthrough in the area of patient safety, the moreOB Program remains the flagship product of Salus Global today. It has been implemented in over 300 labor and delivery units and delivered to more than 16,000 participants across Canada and a few in the United States. In fact, over 80% of births in Canada occur in hospitals that are currently or have engaged in the moreOB Program.
In 2007, seeking a strategic partner, the SOGC approached the Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) and the two entities acted upon their common interest of improving patient safety and formed Salus Global Corporation. Dr. Ken Milne became the founding President and CEO of Salus Global Corporation on July 1, 2007.
Most recently in 2019, the CMPA joined SOGC and HIROC as an equal shareholder in Salus Global bringing together years of experience and insight of each organization and a deep understanding of the issues contributing to patient safety incidents in obstetrical and perinatal care.
